Participation Policies and Procedures


Antelope View Charter School makes use of the following procedures and practices when providing educational program to students:


Antelope View Charter School has established the following procedures and practices when providing an educational program to students: enrollment is contingent on student academic performance, observance of a Code of Conduct, and participation. Failure to observe the guidelines in this handbook will result in a corrective processes and subsequent consideration for dismissal.


Academics


Students and parents are expected to invest the time and effort necessary to take advantage of the school program. All learning activities will be designed to support student success. Students, parents, teachers and school support staff will be held accountable for achieving standards based educational results for each student and must follow the prescription of the Personalized Learning Plan. Families must have one reliable point of contact (phone) and return phone calls in a reasonable time frame.


A minimum 2.0 Grade Point Average must be maintained in order for students to remain in the program. All necessary support will be provided to each student in order that minimum academic performance expectations can be met. All students must be enrolled in core academics including math, science, language arts and social studies.


Conduct


Students are expected to observe guidelines in a published Code of Conduct, including guidelines related to the wearing of a picture ID badge, appropriate attire, contraband items, responsible use of the facility and technology, and pro-social interaction.


Parents and other family members who participate in providing instruction or collaboration with AVCS staff are expected to observe guidelines in a published Code of Conduct, including guidelines related to pro-social interaction.


Attendance and Preparedness


Students will arrive punctually and ready to learn, to all meetings or classes and bring requisite materials, assignments, and documentation. Failure to adhere to meeting attendance and preparedness standards will affect student grades and credits and may affect a student's continued enrollment in AVCS.


1. Students will adhere to a schedule of meetings with a consulting credentialed teacher to be held at least once per week.

  • a. Cancellation of any meeting must be made with the consulting teacher 24 hours in advance (at least 1 hour in advance in the case of illness).
  • b. Alternative times must be established within five calendar days to make up any missed meetings.
  • c. A Learning Log that tracks student time spent completing independent work each of the days of the previous week will be due to the consulting teacher at each weekly meeting.
  • d. Failure to complete 100% of all meetings with a consulting teacher may result in student probation and consideration for dismissal.

2. Students will attend scheduled site-based classes. It may not be possible to make up absences from scheduled classes. Absences may affect the final grade.

  • a. Students who have an unexcused absence will receive a warning. Three warnings for any violation of the agreements will result in a student being placed on probation.
  • b. Students may not elect to exchange a site-based class for an independent study option to complete the class once enrolled without approval from the Director and counselor.
  • c. Changes cannot be made in student schedules after the published deadlines, typically at the halfway point in a semester.

3. Students will adhere to a schedule of meetings with assigned tutors.

  • a. Students are responsible to confirm in advance, meetings with tutors and to verify attendance at tutorial meetings with the consulting teacher.
    • i. Cancellation of any meeting must be made with the tutor 24 hours in advance (at least 1 hour in advance in the case of illness). Alternative times must be established within 5 days to make up meetings.
    • ii. Students are responsible to communicate such cancellations or changes in tutorial meeting arrangements to the consulting teacher.
  • b. Failure to complete 100% of all meetings with a tutor or other supplementary services provider will affect the final grades in related courses and may result in student probation and consideration for dismissal.

4. Students will participate in assessment. Students are expected to participate in assessment required by the state of California and AVCS. These activities often require additional meetings to be designated by the school or the teacher and will require that parents transport students to the school for the assessment.

  • a. Students are required to participate in teacher-made tests or assignments that assess student progress in course work/mastery of California State Standards.
  • b. Students are required to keep a binder of work to document their progress.
  • c. Students are required to participate in systematic whole school assessment of student achievement in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the program in meeting student needs and plan for program or curriculum improvements.
  • d. Students are required to participate with Center Unified School District to assess all students with Physical Fitness Testing, and the CAHSEE (California High School Exit Exam).
  • e. Students are required to participate with Center Unified School District to assess all students according to STAR (Standardized Testing and Reporting) requirements.

5. Parent Support and Participation:

  • a. Parents are required to support and supervise students to complete five (5) hours, daily, of instruction.
  • b. Parents are required to sign-off on the Learning Log to verify student use of time to study and complete school work.
  • c. Parents are required to supervise the maintenance of student binders with completed school work organized by content area and in chronological order to include the following.
    • i. Assignments and documentation of work completed (i.e. activities to earn Physical Education credit, etc.)
    • ii. Projects or project descriptions
    • iii. Assessment results as provided by the teacher to the student
  • d. Parents are expected to support their student to be prepared for classes.
  • e. Parents are required to meet with the consulting teacher or tutor to discuss student progress and to sign required weekly/monthly documentation.
  • f. When occasional illness requires changes in a schedule parents are expected to give 24 hr notice if possible or to call the morning of the appointment and to establish an alternative meeting time within five calendar days.
  • g. Parents must deliver students within 10 minutes of before a class or appointment and should pick-up students within 10 minutes after a class or appointment.
    • i. Students who come to school unescorted by parents are expected to go directly from home to school and to return directly home.
  • h. Parents are expected to help their student remember to wear a picture ID badge when coming to school.

Reimbursement for Expenses - Student Budget


Each student has a school year curriculum budget of 250 credits. Capped at 25 credits per month enrolled, these credits are pro-rated depending on the enrollment date. Credits will be allowed for academic expenses only, no supplies. Reimbursements will be made after completion of each month of attendance. Submit the reimbursement form with original receipt and proof of payment. Should you have any questions or concerns about allowable expenses, please feel free to call the Accounts Management Technician at 338-6358.


Restrictions to the Curriculum Allowance

  • All services must correlate to the Master Agreement and Monthly Goals and Verification Sheet.
    • Students will not be reimbursed for expenses related to a course on their Master Agreement that is not a required course. (i.e. if a student has satisfied the requirement for Visual and Performing Arts or for Physical Education, it is permissible to take another class in these areas for credit, but students will not be reimbursed for expenses related to classes taken after the requirement is fulfilled.)
  • The cut-off date for reimbursements is the 1st week in May each year.
  • Only half of the curriculum allowance may be spent each semester.
  • Unused credits will not be carried over from semester to semester.
  • Reimbursements will not be made for expenditures exceeding $25.00/month.
  • AVCS takes no responsibility for financial contracts in which parents engage without prior authorization.
  • The parent is responsible for all materials checked out from or belonging to AVCS and will be responsible for payment of any lost or damaged books and materials.
  • All supplies remain the property of AVCS.

Student Probationary Procedures

  • Antelope View Charter School policies and practices are designed to support student achievement and continued attendance in the school program. Students who do not fully participate in the program are provided an individualized support plan as part of a probationary process.
  • Students who are not able or willing to make use of support to participate according to school criteria will be dismissed from voluntary enrollment in the Antelope View Charter School.

Student Withdrawal Procedures

  • Students enroll in the Antelope View Charter School on a voluntary basis and may withdraw from the program at will.
  • Parents are responsible to contact school administration to communicate their intent to withdraw their student.
  • Parents are responsible to return all textbooks and learning materials.
  • The Antelope View Charter School will provide the parent with a formal withdrawal document and an exit survey.
  • Records will be forwarded to a receiving educational agency upon written request from the school or district in which the student enrolls after withdrawal from Antelope View Charter School.
