Parent Student Fundamental Participation Agreement

Memorandum of Understanding

Academic TriangleThe Academic Triangle is critical to the success of Antelope View Charter School. The diagram graphically represents an agreement between the school, our students and their parents. Maintaining agreed upon commitments demonstrates that learning is a priority.

Students are immersed in rigorous classroom instruction and a teacher/parent supervised independent study. Students are required to enroll in site-based core courses based on California Content Standards. Program options to support advanced students are facilitated both on campus, through personalized independent study and through local community college access. Group instruction is provided to target achievement deficits and to accelerate learning for students who are behind in their studies.

Remedial courses are not optional. If student achievement data indicates that such a course would be of benefit to the student, it will be a required class. Students in grades 6-9 who are below grade level in STAR scores and AVCS assessments would be a part of this group. High school students who have not passed the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) after the 10th grade initial assessment will be assigned site-based courses in Language Arts and/or Math. English Language Learners who do not appear to be making adequate progress in language acquisition as determined by assessment with the California English Language Development Test (CELDT) and/or identification by Student Study Team (SST) members will be assigned site-based remediation courses and/or tutoring.

Students will adhere to a schedule of meetings with a consulting credentialed teacher to be held at least once per week.

  • Cancellation of any meeting must be made with the consulting teacher 24 hours in advance (at least 1 hour in advance in the case of illness).
  • Alternative times must be established within five calendar days to make up any missed meetings.
  • A Learning Log that tracks student time spent completing independent work each of the days of the previous week will be due to the consulting teacher at each weekly meeting.
    • Failure to complete 100% of all meetings with a consulting teacher may result in student probation and considered for dismissal.

Students will attend scheduled site-based classes. It may not be possible to make up absences from scheduled classes. Absences may affect the final grade.

  • Students who have an unexcused absence will receive a warning. Three warnings for any violation of the agreements will result in a student being placed on probation.
  • Students may not elect to exchange a site-based class for an independent study option to complete the class once enrolled without approval from the Director and counselor.

Students will adhere to a schedule of meetings with assigned tutors.

  • Students are responsible to confirm in advance, meetings with tutors and to verify attendance at tutorial meetings with the consulting teacher. Cancellation of any meeting must be made with the tutor 24 hours in advance (at least 1 hour in advance in the case of illness). Alternative times must be established within 5 days to make up meetings.
  • Students are responsible to communicate such cancellations or changes in tutorial meeting arrangements to the consulting teacher.
    • Failure to complete 100% of all meetings with a tutor or other supplementary services provider will affect the final grades in related courses and may result in student probation and considered for dismissal.

Students will participate in assessment. Students are expected to participate in assessment required by the state of California and AVCS. These activities often require additional meetings to be designated by the school or the teacher and will require that parents transport students to the school for the assessment.

  • Students are required to participate in teacher made tests or assignments that assess student progress in course work/mastery of California State Standards.
  • Students are required to keep a binder of work to document their progress.
  • Students are required to participate in systematic whole school assessment of student achievement in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the program in meeting student needs and plan for program or curriculum improvements.
  • Students are required to participate with Center Unified School District to assess all students with Physical Fitness Testing, and the CAHSEE (California High School Exit Exam).
  • Students are required to participate with Center Unified School District to assess all students according to STAR (Standardized Testing and Reporting) requirements.

Parent Support and Participation:

  • Parents are required to support and supervise students to complete five (5) hours, daily, of instruction.
  • Parents are required to sign-off on the Learning Log to verify student use of time to study and complete school work.
  • Parents are required to supervise the maintenance of student binders with completed school work organized by content area and in chronological order to include the following.
    • Assignments and documentation of work completed (i.e. activities to earn Physical Education credit, etc.).
    • Projects or project descriptions.
    • Assessment results as provided by the teacher to the student.
  • Parents are expected to support their student to be prepared for classes.
  • Parents are required to meet with the consulting teacher or tutor to discuss student progress and to sign required weekly/monthly documentation.
  • When occasional illness requires changes in a schedule parents are expected to give 24 hr notice if possible or to call the morning of the appointment and to establish an alternative meeting time within five calendar days.
  • Parents must deliver or pick-up students within 10 minutes of a class or appointment.
  • Parents are expected to help their student remember to wear a picture ID badge when coming to school.

Students who arrive at school without the ID badge will be given one warning and a temporary badge. After that, parents will be required to pick students up from school and to bring them back with the badge.

I have read the agreement of the AVCS Academic Triangle, and I understand the requirements of my participation. I am aware that the school will issue three warnings before initiating a probationary process that may result in dismissing a student from AVCS. I understand that my enrollment is initially a trial of 30 days and that it is subsequently contingent on my meeting these requirements.
