Pre-enrollment Assessment

All students who wish to enroll at Antelope View Charter School must follow the AVCS intake/enrollment process. After students attend a group orientation, students who wish to continue with the enrollment process must complete all necessary documentation; then completed documentation is delivered to the registrar. The student is then scheduled for new student assessment, which consists of the following:

  • Standards-based computer assessment, utilizing the Ed-performance Program
    • Assesses students in three content-specific areas:
      • Mathematics
      • Reading
      • Language Arts

Once students have completed the Ed-performance assessment, all students are instructed to write a five-paragraph essay in response to a pre-determined prompt. All students respond to the same prompt. The prompt is then scored against a rubric determining student writing capability, as determined by the categories of below basic, basic, proficient, and advanced.

The assessment results are then printed and analyzed to determine whether each student assessed meets AVCS baseline enrollment criteria of a minimum of fourth grade level performance in English/Language Arts and Mathematics. If students do not meet the minimum of fourth grade level performance standard, the independent study requirement would preclude them from accessing self-directed independent study if their academic ability was below the fourth grade level.

If student performance is above the fourth grade level, but not at the student's actual grade level, the assessment results are analyzed to determine the appropriate remediation class placement. If students are at grade level, then they are placed in the appropriate grade level courses.

The AVCS pre-assessment procedure ensures that all students who wish to enroll at Antelope View are given equal and appropriate access to the educational opportunities that meet their individual needs. The pre-assessment program is the cornerstone of our individual, personalized learning approach.
