Local Education Agency and Charter School Collaborate:
Teaching to the Standards in a College Model Appeals to Students
When children do not neatly fit into traditional models, charter schools can become an alternative that accomplishes the vision of the Charter School and the LEA, allowing children to march to the beat of that different drummer. After years of parallel activities, Antelope View Charter School and Center Unified School District entered into a collaborative relationship to forge a continuum of services for students who might otherwise have dropped out or been expelled.
The educational team at Antelope View Charter School has reinvented itself with the support of a State Dissemination Grant. The process included assessing the educational, fiscal, and organizational needs of the school, and the needs of the sponsoring LEA and community. Based on the data, the team revised the mission of the school and then implemented a two year strategic change plan. The goal was to provide students a personalized program that facilitated the acquisition of information through independent means while offering teacher/student interaction in site-based classes. Students are held accountable for participation in a standards-based curriculum and are required to take remedial courses if individual achievement data indicates a need. The school is structured in a model that is similar to college, with classes held once weekly or more frequently to support the implementation of remedial curriculum formats.
Antelope View Charter School is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and offers an education that is rigorous, personalized and supportive. Our staff invites you to visit the school's web site to share our accomplishments. The Dissemination Grant has been provided to support the development of best practices in charter school education and it is the goal of the State that these practices be shared. At the web site you will be able to view a professionally produced video, a practice which we encourage other schools to consider as an orientation and marketing tool. We have created a manual of best practices in which all documents are available for your use. A power point presentation reflects the typical workshop that we have presented as part of the Dissemination Grant. It is our sincere hope that you will find something of interest and use to you and we welcome a phone call or email contact if you have questions or feedback for us.
