Creative Writing Course Syllabus


Course Information:
Course Title: Creative Writing

Section 2 meets MW Sixth Period, 1:25-2:20


Course Description:
This course is designed to inspire students to become authors through an exploration of literary genres, and a study of the styles of other authors. The genres covered will include: Biographies, Sports stories, and Mysteries. Students will learn essential writing techniques, including the six steps of the writing process, and the elements of a good story. Students will maintain a writing portfolio throughout the year.

Course Policies:

  • All students will be required to come to class prepared with an organized notebook, updated planner/work log, and completed homework.
  • All students will come to class prepared with a highlighter, pen, pencil, paper and appropriate unit packets.
  • All students will be required to write in complete sentences, using correct conventions of punctuation and capitalization, for all assignments.
  • All students will be required to write one or more multiple paragraph essays during each quarter.
  • All students will be required to have parents and their consulting teacher sign and review weekly assignments and bimonthly grade checks.

Attendance/Tardiness Policy: This class meets two times per week; attendance is critical. Parents are required to phone into the school the same day of class when a student is absent from any class and to pick up student work.


Class Participation:

  • Students need to come to class prepared to engage in discussions and activities based on daily reading assignments.

Missed Exams or Assignments:

  • Students and parents are responsible for contacting both the course and consulting teacher for any make up work.
  • Students are required to submit all makeup work at the next class meeting.
  • Late work unless there is an excused absence is marked down 10% per day and will not be accepted more than a week late.

Lab/School Safety:

  • All students are required to wear their school ID badge at all times when on campus.

Grading and Progress Monitoring:

  • 10% Class Participation, 50% Homework, 40% Projects and In-Class Writing Assignments
  • AVCS Grading Policy:
    • 100% - 90% = A
    • 89% - 80% = B
    • 79% - 70% = C
    • 69% - 60% = D
    • 59 and below = Fail

US Government Course Syllabus


Course Information:
Course Title: US Government

Course Description:
A-G APPROVED
This course is designed to equip students with a greater knowledge of local, state, United States and other world governments and their origins and their inner workings. Students will study the origins of American government, the English influence, and the development of the Colonial government and the US Constitution. Students will study the Institutions of government, the politics of public policy, individual rights and responsibilities, state and local governments, and comparative and historical world government. Students will demonstrate the ability to think critically, learn independently, and solve problems by effectively completing challenging projects and assignments.

Chemistry Course Syllabus


Course Information:
Course Title: Chemistry

Course Description:
Chemistry is a yearlong college-prep course taught by lecture, demonstrations, and laboratory methods. This course is a general introductory course in chemistry designed to develop chemical principles and concepts from experimental observations and data and how these principles can be used to explain phenomena in daily life. This course meets the district's third-year science requirement. Prerequisite: Completion of Biology, Algebra I, and Geometry with a grade of "C" or better, and/or concurrent enrollment in Algebra II or a higher level math course.
